Civil war conference at three locations in South Leitrim this weekend

A series of lectures on the Civil War given by Dr. Padraig McGarty will take place at the Aughavas Community Center this Friday, October 14.

The lecture series, which will be held at 6 locations around the county, is funded by the Department of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and Gaeltacht and administered locally by Leitrim County Council is part of a broader series of commemorative initiatives. which took place throughout the department.

Originally from Mohill, Dr McGarty is a lecturer at Munster University of Technology and author of the highly acclaimed Leitrim, The Irish Revolution 1912-23 published by Four Courts Press.

Next weekend October 14-16 the lecture series will be held at the Aughavas Community Center on Friday October 14 and on October 15 the lecture will be given at Ballinamore Library at 7:00 p.m. and at the Mayflower Ballroom at Drumshanbo at 9 p.m.

The October lecture series follows two well-received previous lectures as part of the series given in Mohill and Carrick-on-Shannon last April.

All lectures will describe events in the county and in specific local communities during the traumatic period of the Irish Civil War.

The aim of the series of initiatives is to support the development of community-led commemorative initiatives in remembrance of this complex and challenging time in our history.

Admission to the conferences is free but as numbers are limited, reservations must be made through the local coordinators at all six locations.

In Aughavas, the local contact is Breege Egan, phone: 086 0715255.

Further details on local contacts for the other two conferences will be released later this week.
