Conference Organized by Science City Kolkata on “From Virus Discovery to Vaccine by ICMR-National Institute of Virology”

Science City, Kolkata held a popular science conference titled “From Virus Discovery to Vaccine – A History of ICMR-National Institute of Virology”
The lecture was given by Dr. Priya Abraham, Director, ICMR-National Institute of Virology
Today, a popular scientific lecture titled “From the discovery of the virus to the vaccine – a history of the ICMR-National Institute of Virology” was delivered by Professor (Dr) Priya Abraham, Director of the ICMR-National Institute of virology at Science City, Kolkata. During his lecture, Dr. Abraham highlighted the pivotal role of the ICMR National Institute of Virology in India’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. She highlighted how scientists at the institute have worked tirelessly to tame this pandemic and how ICMR-NIV has contributed on several different fronts like finding the first cases of COVID-19 in India, visualizing the virus under a microscope electronics, provision of RT-PCR test across the country, organization of numerous online training sessions for labs across the country, Iran Mission, repatriation of other Indians stranded abroad, culture of the virus in vitro for the first time in India, performing the first antibody test for the country, the start of the vaccine journey, tracking virus variants and continuing the journey.
Prior to the lecture, Shri Samarendra Kumar, Warden (Hqrs.), HMCS welcomed Dr. Priya Abraham along with distinguished guests and students present at the venue and said the lecture would be beneficial for the students in understanding the nature of the virus and how vaccines are administered to save millions of lives. He also said that “The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) has collaborated with the Science Museum Group London and Wellcome trust in the development of an international traveling exhibition entitled ‘Vaccines-Injecting Hope’. The exhibition will visit five cities of New Delhi, Nagpur, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata from November 2022 to September 2025.
Shri Anurag Kumar, Director of Science City, said, “Science City has always been instrumental in providing a platform for interaction with Nobel laureates, scientists, innovators, etc. I hope that the students present here will benefit immensely from this conference. This will not only enrich their knowledge base but also inspire them to think like a scientist and contribute to the development of the nation in the future.
Over 350 students and teachers from seven schools in Kolkata attended the conference.
