Conference: The model, path of development of Christian charity in China

A Christian scholar named Luo Shuai gave a lecture titled “The Pattern and Development Path of Christian Charity in China” to report on how Christian charity in China has developed.

As part of the 11th “Charity Culture Lecture” organized by the China Institute for Philanthropy and Social Innovation of Renmin University of China, the lecture includes four main points.

The context of charity, the biblical basis and research methods

On the background of Christian charity, Mr. Luo talked about four aspects: religion, Bible, charity and society. The ideas of the Bible have greatly influenced Christians and have thus introduced new factors into the development of traditional charity. There are many teachings on charity in the Bible, which make charity the norm of the daily life of Christians, directly guiding their behavior.

From the biblical basis, the Bible teaches that believers should not persecute others, instructing, for example, that those who give are happier than those who receive – these teachings make Christian charity active and passive, theoretical and practical at a time.

Luo’s common research methods include interviews, participant observation, literature reviews, and participation.

Relevant conceptual definitions and theoretical analyzes

From two angles: correct understanding and precise positioning, Mr. Luo defined the different concepts within Christian charity. Then, it summarizes the characteristics of each concept. Finally, he gave analyzes of the related theories from the angle of “margins and collisions between religion and charity” and briefly presented the social campaigns supported by the theories.

Christian models of public welfare

Mr. Luo first gave a summary of Christian public welfare models, including faith-based charitable foundations, church-centered charitable institutions and organizations, biblical-idea-centered public charities, donations religious charities centered on the love of God and religious institutions centered on service of various kinds.

Christian charity service targets include Christians, non-believers, and nature.

The three perspectives of Christian public welfare macro-development include the theory of charity, the history of charity, and the practice of charity.

A Brief Analysis of the Development Path of Christian Charity in China

The four influential factors for the path of development are charitable awareness and culture, government stipulations, laws and regulations, and the internal administration of organizations. Although all have impacts on the development of Chinese Christian charity, the intensity of each is different.

The direction in which Christian public welfare develops is legalized identity, professional skills, and secularized charity.

Finally, Luo concluded that since the development of Christian charity, outstanding achievements have been made in the field. However, in the context of the new era, one must consider how a balance can be struck between the religious purpose and the charitable purpose of Christian charity on the basis of maintaining the original charitable achievements, and how the label “religious of charity can be removed. , and how we can adapt to changes in social policy and the environment. These are all realistic problems that Christian charity will have to face and solve now and in the future.
