Eileen Collins holds a signing session at Wings of Eagles

HORSEHEADS, NY (WETM) — Elmira-born and retired astronaut Eileen Collins had lines of people at the door of the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center waiting their turn for Eileen to sign a copy of her new book.

The book, titled “From the Glass Ceiling to the Stars”, for the first time tells the story of Eileen through her various accomplishments and the opportunities she has had throughout her life.

The event took place inside the museum hangar and was sold out throughout the event, giving those who showed up the opportunity to speak with Eileen and have their book signed while being surrounded by famous military aircraft.

18 News had the chance to speak to Eileen about her book and was asked what kind of message she wanted to convey to young people in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes,

“Just stay focused on what you’re here for,” she said, referring to young women in STEM programs, “If you like the subject, stay focused on it and push through and I guarantee there will be a job waiting for you because employers love STEM degrees.

Eileen went on to say how important STEM degrees are, for both men and women, especially now that they are in such demand in this county.

When asked how the book came to be, she told 18 News it was the pandemic that gave her the time to sit down and write the book with co-author Jonathan Ward. . After canceling her events and plans due to lockdown, it allowed her to finally create this book about her journey.

The signing was a great way for the community to get a chance to meet a local legend and hang out at one of the area’s top attractions at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center.
