Lecture: ‘What does human dignity mean and why should we care?’

Professor McCrudden

Professor Christopher McCrudden will give the annual Richard O’Sullivan Memorial Lecture this Thursday, May 26, 2022 at 6 p.m. at Notre Dame University near Trafalgar Square in London on: “What does human dignity mean and why should we care? “

International human rights claim to be based on the principle of “human dignity”, and references to this are now commonplace in political discourse and judicial opinion in the UK, Europe, the Commonwealth, in North and South America and in the countries of the South.

For such a pervasive and central idea, “human dignity” has become more, not less, controversial since its inclusion in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

What does “human dignity” mean? What is due to the different meanings attributed to it? And why is it so controversial, both left and right, among religious followers and secularists? Based on recent examples, the conference explores what these debates say about the contested understanding of human rights, and in fact what it means to be human, in our current political and legal systems.

Christopher McCrudden has been Professor of Human Rights and Equality Law at Queen’s University Belfast Law School since 2011, when he returned to Queen’s, and holds a Visiting Professorship in Law global L Bates Lea at the University of Michigan Law School. He was previously Professor of Human Rights Law at Oxford University (the first) and Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. Specializing in human rights, he focuses on issues of equality and discrimination, the relationship between international, European and comparative human rights law and, more recently, the effect of the withdrawal of the Kingdom EU Union on Northern Ireland Law and Policy.

This free conference is in person only. Refreshments will be offered to participants.
